You don’t need to be a chef to make sushi. This basic Maki roll recipe is perfect for beginners.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups cooked sushi rice (seasoned with rice vinegar)
- 4 sheets of Nori (seaweed sheets)
- 1 cucumber (cut into long, thin strips)
- 1 avocado (sliced)
- Imitation crab or fresh salmon (sushi-grade)
- Soy sauce for serving
Steps:
- Prepare the mat: Place a sheet of Nori on a bamboo sushi rolling mat.
- Spread the rice: Wet your hands and spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the Nori, leaving 1 inch empty at the top.
- Add fillings: Lay the cucumber, avocado, and crab/salmon horizontally across the center of the rice.
- Roll it up: Roll the mat tightly away from you to form a log. Press gently to seal it.
- Slice and serve: Use a sharp, wet knife to slice the roll into 6–8 pieces. Serve with soy sauce.
Why you should make this: Making sushi at home is highly customizable, surprisingly affordable, and a great skill to impress your friends.
